Freemasonry in Japan

The first Japanese Lodge is a Military Lodge accepting civilian members (Sphinx Lodge 263) detached from the 20th British Regiment arrived in Yokohama in 1864. Other lodges are gradually lit but the situation begins to deteriorate in the 1930s when the government begins to fight against the fraternal regroupings. The anti-Masonic movements intensified then and all the lodges ceased to operate.
After the war, activities resumed and the Philippine Grand Lodge founds several Lodges on Japanese territory.
General McArthur, commander of US forces occupying Japan is a mason himself and supports these initiatives.
The Grand Lodge of Japan, recognized by the United Grand Lodge of England) was founded in 1957 and has 18 lodges (2,500 members).
Human Rights also has a lodge in Tokyo since 2008.
